Multiplying Two Binomials (FOIL)
Summary
  • To multiply two binomials you have to foil, which is different than multiplying two monomials or a binomial and a monomial.

Step 1. Multiply the first, outer, inner, and last terms

Ex. (x+7)(x-4)

First- x × x = x2
Outer- x × -4 = -4x
Inner- 7 × x = 7x
Last- 7 × -4 = -28

Step 2. Combine all like terms

a) x2 - 4x + 7x - 28
b) -4x + 7x = 3x
c) x2 + 3x - 28
